WHY YOU WILL WANT TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT

WHY YOU WILL WANT TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT

July 26, 20234 min read

There are so many challenges you face every day, that if you don’t get in shape and toughen up, you will not be fit enough to carry out your roles or tasks. Learning how to be uncomfortable and pushing through the pain is a huge advantage in being and staying fit enough to handle anything that comes your way.

And of course, when we talk about fitness, it can and should include being fit in spirit, mind and body.

But when it comes to physical fitness, it typically includes these components:

•  Cardiorespiratory fitness

•  Muscular strength

•  Muscular endurance

•  Body composition

•  Flexibility and balance

So, as you look at that list, are you fit? Do you like the way you look? The way you feel? Are you in exactly the place you hoped to be with your health, wellness and physical shape? Do you implement a consistent, well-balanced, holistic plan that gives you the energy, health and longevity that causes your doctor to scratch his head in amazement and ask you what you’re doing to stay in such remarkable shape?

If no, you are NOT in the physical health and wellness place you want to be, ask yourself why not? It’s probably a simple answer along the lines of:

•  “I just don’t have time.”

•  “I’ve tried everything and nothing works.”

•  “It’s genetics and I have an unusually slow metabolism.”

•  “I don’t know enough about it and don’t know where to start.”

•  “It’s just too hard and I’m fine the way I am.”

• “I simply am not going to give up what I like to eat and I’m sure not going to sweat my butt off to lose a couple pounds!”

So, as you scan that list or add in other reasons why you’re not in shape, you’ve basically chosen to believe lies, right? Is that too harsh? Okay then, consider them instead as excuses. Either way, those reasons are blocking your way and you can, and need to, knock down those barriers!

Getting and staying in shape starts with your mindset, in other words, what you believe and the commitment you will make to achieve it.

It requires you to be brutally honest with yourself and to own up to the consequences of not being healthy and fit. The first place to start is to get clear on exactly what you want for your health and fitness and why you want it. That may sound too elementary, but if you don’t have that clarity solidly locked in your head, then you won’t have enough compelling reason to make changes.

Take a few minutes and think through your answers on why being physically fit and in good health will make a difference in your life..

• Why do you want to look and feel better?

• How will it make a difference for you today, in 90 days, and ten years from now?

•  How will it make a difference for your family? For your work? For your self-image and ability to function at your maximum potential?

•  How can pushing your body to do what is uncomfortable help you face other uncomfortable challenges in other areas of life?

• What difference will it make for you in realigning a healthy self-image?

•  How will it energize and help motivate you to carry out the work God has given you to do?

The Bible says your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit. The Lord doesn’t need you posing on the cover of Muscle and Fitness magazine, but He does expect you to treat your body with respect and to care for it.

“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself…” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

“… I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him” (Romans 12:1).

God has a purpose, plans and “good works” that He created for you to carry out on His behalf. If you needlessly get sick, run out of energy, carry around extra weight that puts your health at risk, you potentially short circuit what God wants to do through you.

Let that motivate you to go after your best health and fitness. Get clear on what you want and why and how you’re going to get there. Set specific goals. Then put a detailed plan together and find a way to be held accountable as you measure your progress and stay committed to being physically fit and healthy.
